“Cargill is a sea of opportunities for knowledge and growth where anyone can swim. But the person who decides to take the risk to swim further will do the best. Take the risk.”

The statement "Our word is our bond" resonates with me because it represents everything Cargill stands for ethically. It represents a long tradition of doing business the right way. I feel confident if I make a mistake that my intentions won’t be questioned.

Describe your work responsibilities and the importance of your role.

My job is to lead operations in our oils and fats business to safely and efficiently supply the demands of industrial and consumer markets. My role is important because I ensure that my business complies with Cargill’s policies regarding ethics, safety, quality and efficiency, and that we are consistent in applying these best practices and procedures across our operations in my country.

Describe your day-to-day activities and the skills needed to perform well.

My main function is to keep the team focused on safety and efficiency in a challenging business environment. The skills most important for my job are empathy, resilience, active communication and the ability to see opportunities for improvement in our processes.

Describe your career path. Where did you start and how did you get to where you are today?

Before my current role, I managed our pasta, flour and rice plants, and also spent five years as a supply chain planning manager. Twenty-five years ago I started my career at Cargill as a young engineer after a short time as an intern at one of our mills. Cargill hired me as a mill shift supervisor at a mill, where I could gain access to people with vast milling knowledge inside and outside of Cargill. After six years with Cargill, I had the opportunity to manage two of the company’s rice plants and to work with a great team. Along the way have come opportunities to manage other plants and collaborate to solve challenges. I am very pleased to have had so many opportunities for growth and the chance to work with such extraordinary people.

What do you find most rewarding about your work?

Learning, the relationship that I have with the people I supervise and especially the opportunity to share my knowledge with younger colleagues.

Why did you choose to join Cargill and what keeps you here? In other words, how has a career at Cargill helped you to thrive?

Truthfully, I joined Cargill because it was the first company to offer me a job. After three months on the job, another company offered me a position. My boss at the time told me to take my time and think about it. Well, 25 years later, here I am still. I stayed here because Cargill poses exciting challenges, encourages learning and presents the opportunity to share what I know with wonderful people. Cargill has given me opportunities to be the person I want to be.

What advice would you give someone interested in a career at Cargill like yours?

Be committed to compliance with the principles of the organization. Be consistent with learning and don’t fear taking smart risks. And finally, build relationships with people.

Share an interesting tidbit about yourself such as hobbies, volunteerism, favorite foods or activities, accomplishments inside or outside of work.

I have a beautiful family, including three children and a grandchild with whom I enjoy spending time in nature. Travelling is one of my favorite hobbies. My children are professionals and are making their living away from home, but my family remains close. And I also consider Cargill to be my family. I keep studying and walking in the mountains. These are my passions.
